Gustavo F. Araoz is President of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).  From 1995 to 2009  he served as Executive Director of US/ICOMOS in Washington, DC.  ICOMOS is a professional association that works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places around the world and offers advice to UNESCO on World Heritage Sites. Now headquartered in Paris, ICOMOS was founded in 1965 in Warsaw as a result of the 1964 Venice Charter. ICOMOS currently has over 9,500 individual members in 144 countries, is represented by 110 National Committees, and provides specialised conservation advice by way of its 28 International Scientific Committees.
