The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) has been assigned the task of managing and disposing of the radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel from the Swedish reactors. In March 2011, SKB applied to the Swedish Radiation Authority and to the Land and Environmental Court for permissions to build a repository for spent nuclear fuel. We expect the facility to be ready to receive the first deliveries of spent nuclear fuel for final disposal by about 2030. After closure of the repository, which is expected at the earliest in 2070, the content will need to be isolated from humans and the environment for about 100,000 years. SKB works in various ways with the topic of how to preserve information and knowledge about the repository for thousands of years.
